  The district of Chikmagalur, in the south-western part of Karnataka State, is known as the Coffeeland of Karnataka. It is famous for its hill stations and scenic beauty. A large area of this district is Malnad, i.e., a largely forested hilly region of heavy rainfall.

The Chikmagalur town enjoys a salubrious climate since it is located at an elevation of 1037 meters (3,400 feet). The hill stations around are famous summer retreats since they remain cool even during summers.

The district takes its name from the headquarter’s town of Chickmagalur which literally means younger daughter's town - Chikka + Magala + Ooru (in Kannada). It is said to have been given as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakrepatna. Another part of the town bestowed on the elder daughter is known as Hiremagalur, which is now part of Chikmagalur town.

Chikmagalur is a place for tourists. The view of the town is supposed to best from the top of the Mahatma Gandhi Park also called the Rathnagiri hill. Among the other attractions are
• Mullayanagiri: highest peak of Karnataka
• Baba Budangiri: a mountain in the Baba Budan Giri Range
• Ayyanakere: ancient tank constructed by Rukmangada raya, a chief of Sakrepatna
• Kondadarama Temple: mix of Hoysala and Dravidian architecture
• St. Joseph's Cathedral: eye-catching shell-shaped port
• Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary (Muthodi): home to animals like gaur, chital, sambar, elephants and tigers
